MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) -

Two people were killed when a plane crashed on a golf course near Falcon Field in Mesa on Monday evening.

It happened at the Longbow Golf Course, which is near the end of the runway of the airport. The golf course is located near McDowell Road between Recker and Higley roads.

Aerials from the news helicopter showed the plane was destroyed.

According to the FAA, the pilot reported mechanical trouble and was unable to reach the airport. The plane went down about 1/2 mile short of the Runway 22 at Falcon Field.

The two dead people were those onboard. Authorities haven’t said if anyone on the ground has died.

There was a charred area on one of the fairways, which means there was likely a fire after the plane crashed.

There were no skid marks on the golf course. The airport remained open.

The FAA said the plane was a Lancair Evolution, which is a single engine plane.

Falcon Field is a regional airport that pilots use to fly smaller and often older planes.

The FAA and the NTSB are investigating.
