Police on Wednesday said further investigation led them to charge a second driver in a four-car wreck that killed 71-year-old Barbara Waldron Dennis on Monroe Road on May 11.
Justin Michael Farruggia, 33, turned himself in at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, after police obtained warrants charging him with misdemeanor death by vehicle and careless and reckless driving. Farruggia was jailed Wednesday night on $12,500 bail.
Police said Farruggia was speeding at 66 mph in a posted 45-mph zone, moments before he hit a 2011 Volvo XC90 driven by 68-year-old William Vincent Graham Jr.
Farruggia’s 2016 Hyundai Elantra careened into the opposite lanes and hit a 2012 Toyota Corolla driven by Dennis, who was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
The crash happened at 4:47 p.m. at Greylyn Business Park Drive.
Police charged Graham last week with misdemeanor death by vehicle, saying he turned left from Greylyn Business Park Drive onto Monroe Road and directly into oncoming vehicles.
Other than Dennis, everyone had a seat belt on and had only minor injuries, police said.
In a news release announcing Farruggia’s arrest late Wednesday, police made no mention of dropping Graham’s charge. A police spokeswoman said she could confirm only what was in the release.
