Few teams were as active as the 49ers this offseason, whether it was in the draft or free agency. And for the most part, their moves were commendable. However, they’re still in awful shape for 2017.
They don’t have a legitimate starting quarterback, their wide receiver corps is among the worst in the NFL, and there are serious questions at cornerback with a very young group likely pegged as starters.
In all likelihood, it’ll probably be Brian Hoyer as the team’s starting quarterback in Week 1. Based on the way he played last season, that’s not necessarily a terrible thing. However, will Matt Barkley push him in training camp? It could happen.
Outside of Pierre Garcon at wide receiver, the 49ers are lost. Marquise Goodwin is a one-trick pony, Bruce Ellington is unproven and Jeremy Kerley isn’t a big-play threat. Sorting out the depth chart will be a challenge, and that’s not a compliment.
On defense, Rashard Robinson proved to be a pleasant surprise at corner last season, but will a sophomore slump hit? Can Dontae Johnson handle a full-time starting job? Will Ahkello Witherspoon develop quickly enough to be a starter? Those are questions the 49ers need answers to.
