The westward stream of inventive new music from the Baltic nations, which began gathering momentum a couple of decades ago, only grows more notable with each passing year. One example among many is the Latvian composer Eriks Esenvalds, whose soulful, spiritually tinged music has been the subject of increasing interest.
Esenvalds is noted particularly for his choral music, and now the Valley Concert Chorale is presenting a weekend mini-festival of his work. With the composer on hand, conductor John Emory Bush will lead performances of Esenvalds’ “Nunc Dimittis,” “Trinity Te Deum” and other, less overtly liturgical works as well.
