‘Being Mary Jane’ Star Gabrielle Union Reacts To Series Cancellation On Instagram


Following news that BET would be canceling their hit series, “Being Mary Jane” with a two hours series finale, Gabrielle Union took to Instagram to reflect on her time on the show and assure fans that the end of the series will be unforgettable.

On Wednesday, the actress shared a series of photos of herself and the cast throughout the years, while penning a heartfelt message to fans after spending four seasons on television. “We have all worked so tirelessly to bring you a show that we could be proud to be a part of. Mary Jane has become my favorite character. We’ve screwed up together, laughed together, evolved together, and raised hell together,” she wrote.

“I love all her imperfections, and through playing her I became more forgiving of others who are imperfect and on the journey of self-discovery and improvement,” Union added.

The star went to discuss Mary Jane’s many struggles and how she was eventually able to overcome them. Although the character may have worked through a majority of her problems, Union promised that her final journey will be one fans won’t want to miss.

“We, as a Being Mary Jane family, cannot wait to bring you this final 2 hour series finale movie that will answer all your questions about each and every character. More than anything, however, we want to thank you with every fiber of our being for faithfully watching the show and supporting our work… from the actors, writers, producers, directors and enormous crew over the years, we are humbled and we remain grateful. Thank you!”

Echoing Union’s response, BET also promised to give fans a series finale that they would be satisfied with. “Thanks for tuning into this season of #BeingMaryJane, and helping us trend around the world! With all of the burning questions, will MJ find a way to have it all? Don’t worry #Beingmaryjane fans, you won’t have to wait long because she’ll be back in 2018 for a two-hour series finale event. Stay tuned!” a statement on the show’s Facebook page read.

Union starred on the series as Mary Jane Paul, an ambitious TV news anchor who was determined to be successful in her career. Although BET promises a worthy finale, Union is the is the only star that has signed on for the series finale. According to E! News, none of the other cast members or producers from the original series are attached to project just yet.

Despite the end of the series, BET has praised Union’s successful show and the impact it has made on others. “‘Being Mary Jane’ has been a landmark series not only for BET, but for African American women around the world who saw themselves in Mary Jane, her family, friends and coworkers,” Connie Orlando, EVP and Head of Programming for BET Networks, said in a statement.

“From the captivating storytelling to the richly complex characters, to the powerful issues tackled on the series, we remain immensely proud. We are grateful to the cast and creators of ‘Being Mary Jane,’ who have worked tirelessly to bring this world to vivid life over the past 4 seasons,” she added.

“We also thank the many loyal viewers whose hearts and minds were captured every week, and kept Mary Jane trending worldwide. We look forward to closing out Mary Jane’s journey with a series finale that is sure to blow fans away!”

Although Union has responded to the cancellation of “Being Mary Jane” on social media, her cast mates have remained silent about the end of the series.
