Capital Facts: No, the Rideau Canal isn't the longest skating trail in the world

In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

The Rideau Canal Skateway isn’t the longest ice skating trail in the world – that honour belongs to the nearly 30-km long Lake Windermere Whiteway in Invermere, B.C. But it’s the biggest and on a natural body of water to boot, according to the Guinness World Records, which gave the nod in 2005. The skateway is 7.8-km long and has a total maintained surface area of more than 165,000 metres – the equivalent of90 Olympic-sized rinks.
