The Coast Guard and other agencies are investigating a fuel spill on a stretch of the Mississippi River near New Orleans.
About 7 a.m. Monday, the tug boat Haley Brooke began taking on water while operating on a section of the lower Mississippi near Belle Chase, La., Coast Guard officials said.
The tug boat carried about 6,000 gallons of diesel fuel. The spill was estimated to be about 20 gallons, officials said.
About 500 feet of containment boom was stretched around the tugboat to prevent the oil from spreading. Absorbent pads were applied to clean up the spill. It doesn’t appear any oil reached the shoreline, Coast Guard officials said.
