With its latest production, “Macbeth,” Gritty City Repertory Youth Theatre is once again on the front lines of theater for young adults.
The 5-year-old company mounts both classics and new plays, all performed by underserved youths of color from the East Bay. Channeling Orson Welles’ so-called “Voodoo Macbeth,” this version of Shakespeare’s bloody tragedy is set in Haiti during its fight for independence, inspired by the meteoric rise and fall of revolutionary Henri Christophe. Maurice Jones Jr. plays the title role, a triumphant general spurred to murder by the power of prophecy and by the darkness within him.
Executive artistic director and founder Lindsay Krumbein directs.
