Houston mom charged in stabbing death of 4-year-old set to appear in court Tuesday

A mother accused of stabbing her 4-year-old daughter Sunday evening in northwest Harris County is expected in court Tuesday.

Laquita Lewis, 34, was charged with capital murder in the death of Fredricka Allen.

She is expected to appear before state District Judge Maria Jackson Tuesday, where she will be formally arraigned and an attorney will likely be appointed.

Harris County Sheriff’s deputies say Laquita Lewis texted friends to admit she had hurt her daughter after being involved in a crash Sunday, June 18, 2017. When deputies arrived to perform a welfare check on the 4-year-old child, they discovered her dead.

Prosecutors said the police were called to Lewis’ apartment in the 5600 block of Timber Creek Place about 8:40 p.m. where they found the child bleeding heavily on the floor of the master bedroom.

The family called the Harris County Sheriff’s Office after Lewis apparently told the father what happened.

“The defendant told the father that their daughter was no longer alive and was in Heaven,” prosecutor Lori DeAngelo said magistrate court. “She told the father she stabbed the (victim) in the chest with a knife.”

The texts and calls happened after Lewis was involved in a crash Sunday. Lewis was in the hospital with minor injuries as deputies found her daughter’s body.

Lewis is being held without bail, which is typical in capital murder case. Lewis could face life without parole or the death penalty if convicted. The decision to seek death is generally made months after an arrest, after prosecutors and the defense have completed their investigations.

Lewis has a history of threatening violence toward her children, court records show.
Lewis pleaded guilty in February to threatening to murder her 16-year-old son, which is a misdemeanor. Lewis was on probation at the time of the stabbing.

Deputies had not determined early Monday why Lewis would kill her daughter, though they believe Lewis got into a fight with her boyfriend earlier on Sunday, sheriff’s spokesman Thomas Gilliland said.
