To Northeast’s Izayah Williams, this is lunch. This and a nice turkey on wheat with some fruit snacks.
“This right here. Winning the region, this is the lunch of champions,” Williams said.
Williams led Northeast to its first Region 5 AAA title in 20 years with his two home runs that boosted Northeast to a 6-1 win against Beech. Both teams will move on to the sectionals but Beech will have to travel thanks to the loss.
“I was just trying to see a pitch to hit,” Williams said. “I wasn’t trying to do too much.”
Sectional games will be Friday night.
“Our guys have played really well down the stretch,” said coach Dustin Smith. “ … They accomplished something.”
Northeast started its offense surge on Williams’ first solo home run in the third inning that was immediately followed with an RBI double from Chris Barnes. In the fourth, the team added two more runs and an additional in the fifth before Williams end capped the Eagles’ efforts with his second home run.
Beech added its single run late in the final innings of the game.
“We got no offense going at all. I’m not sure. Taking (batting practice) before the game we looked good,” said Beech coach Jimmy Neal.
