Parking, traffic problems expected downtown tonight for Astros, Rockets games

Houston officials are so worried people will lose out on a decent downtown experience because of two major sporting events and the traffic and parking problems they might create, the city’s office of emergency management sent out an alert.

Tonight the Houston Astros will host the New York Yankees at Minute Maid Park to open the American League Championship Series, while the Houston Rockets a few blocks away will welcome the San Antonio Spurs for a pre-season game. Both games start at 7 p.m.

As a result, officials are warning people to plan ahead and prepare for heavy traffic. Houston Downtown Management District operates a comprehensive map of parking garage and lot options. On-street parking is also free after 6 p.m.

In addition, officials said people could avoid issues by taking public transit, taxis or ride-hailing services such as Uber or Lyft.
