Rap legend Too $hort performs hometown show in Oakland

Where you heard Too $hort for the first time is a sign of local street cred. In a boom box at the park. From the bass of a passing car on MacArthur Boulevard. Maybe from Too $hort himself out of the trunk of his car.

The rapper and do-it-yourself entrepreneurial legend returns home to the Fox Theater on Friday, May 19, for a solo show — no doubt playing some 1980s classics (“Life is … Too $hort” and “The Ghetto”) and newer tracks (“Blow the Whistle”).

His 20th and reportedly final studio album, “The Pimp Tape,” drops this summer. Snoop Dogg, 2 Chainz and local legends including Mistah F.A.B., G-Eazy and E-40 appear. There’s no guarantee other local rappers will show up to pay their respects at the Fox, but wouldn’t you?

Too $hort: 8 p.m. Friday, May 19. $45-$55. Fox Theater, 1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland.
