Trump criticizes news, questions First Amendment rights

President Donald Trump questioned the accuracy of news reports about his intentions with the country’s nuclear arsenal while challenging news outlets’ rights under the First Amendment.

“It’s frankly disgusting the way the press is able to write whatever they want to write, and people should look into it,” Trump said.

Under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, the government is prohibited from making any law that infringes “upon the freedom of the press.”

Trump was discussing a report by NBC News, saying it was fake. The article stated that the president wanted what amounted to a nearly tenfold increase in the country’s nuclear arsenal.

Trump said he has never discussed increasing the number of nuclear weapons the U.S. has. The president said he wants the nuclear force to be in perfect working condition.

“(To have) 10 times what we have right now, it’s totally unnecessary,” Trump said. “We won’t need an increase, but I want modernization, and I want total rehabilitation.”
