President Donald Trump on Thursday morning blasted the naming of Robert Mueller as special counsel to lead the investigation into alleged Russian election meddling and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.
In a pair of early morning tweets, the president raged against perceived hypocrisy regarding his former campaign rival and his White House predecessor, writing “With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel [sic] appointed!”
He also called the investigation “the single greatest with hunt of a politician in American history!”
The comments strike a different tone from the terse statement he released Wednesday:
“A thorough investigation will confirm what we already know — there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity. I look forward to this matter concluding quickly.”
It also marked the end of something of a Twitter hiatus for Trump, who is rarely shy from voicing his personal opinions on the social media platform.
Before Thursday, his last tweets regarding the firing of former FBI Director James Comey were Tuesday. Since then, he had tweeted a news story on industrial production and a pair of videos on his meeting with the Turkish leader and his commencement speech at the Coast Guard Academy.
