CHARLIE Hunnam has revealed that he did not speak to his girlfriend during the filming of Lost City of Z.
The Sons of Anarchy star takes the lead in the new period drama based on the real life explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett who left his family in England to search for a missing city in the Amazon.
Filming took place in Colombia, South America, which meant phone and Internet signal was pretty dodgy and even the mail system was unreliable.
“We went to Colombia, and the mail system doesn’t really work very well,” Hunnam told Entertainment Weekly.
“It’s completely unreliable. I received a letter from her, and I realized that from the tone of it and things she was saying that she hadn’t received the two letters that I sent before.”
Charlie decided then to not contact her at all which made it easier to understand his character more.
“One of the things that [director James Gray] and I felt strongly that we wanted to explore in the film,” he explained,
“Was the conflict between family life and the exterior demands that are made on us and the social and economic demands that we all need to deal with in life, being balanced or in conflict with the internal drive, to be the people we want to be and achieve the things that we want to achieve.”
During an interview on This Morning Charlie spoke about the decision to not speak to girlfriend Morgana further.
“I never went to film school and I subscribe to whatever works,” he told Rylan and Alison. “I turned the phone off, turned the computer off and didn’t go on the Internet and it was wonderful to experience.”
Charlie said his girlfriend was “pretty incredible” about the silent treatment too.
The Lost City of Z premiere took place in London on Thursday night with stars Sienna Miller, Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson in attendance with his girlfriend FKA twigs.
